1.2 Discovery of the CBS Mutation
DNA Bypass: Chronic Pain and Systemic Inflammation – How Genetic Testing Led to My Liberation from Pain
What I Found in the Test Results
Amid the long list of genetic results, one item stood out: CBS mutation.
These three letters caught my eye. When I looked into it, I realized it might explain the chronic health issues I’d experienced for years.
What the CBS Mutation Means
CBS (Cystathionine Beta-Synthase) is a gene that encodes an enzyme involved in sulfur metabolism.
When a mutation is present, the function of this enzyme can become impaired, and certain compounds may not be properly metabolized.
This bottleneck in the pathway might be placing a hidden burden on the body.
A Hypothesis: Sulfur Compounds and My Symptoms
Next, I turned my attention to sulfur-rich foods.
In a body with a CBS mutation, these compounds might accumulate instead of being processed efficiently.
This buildup could be contributing to persistent fatigue and neurological symptoms—or so the hypothesis goes.
The troubling part was that many of these high-sulfur foods were things I had believed to be healthy.
